Snuff is a 1976 American splatter film. It is most well known for being falsely marketed as an actual snuff film, its subsequent investigation and banning, and further controversy surrounding their marketing tactics & critical response.

The film follows a Satanic biker gang tracking down and killing those as commanded by their leader, a man named Satán. At the same time, an adult film actress and her producer travel to South America to film her next movie. Slowly, her friends and film crew come under the crosshairs of the gang, getting picked off one by one. The final scene, filmed by a different crew than the rest of the movie, drew the most controversy, as the special effects had audiences convinced they had witnessed a real murder; as of the present day it can be easily spotted as convincing practical effects.

Child Harm

There is a flashback involving Angelica, one of the women in the biker gang, where she recounts being sexually assaulted near daily by the caretaker of her childhood home from ages 12-17. The first assault is not shown, only her cries of defiance. [59:40-1:01:08] Scenes where she is older are shown [58:12, 1:01:12], up to when her father walks in and threatens her abuser, and is subsequently shot by him. [1:01:12-1:02:00]

Racism

During the Carnival scene, several shots of people in blackface and stereotypical Native American garb are shown as part of the street parade. [29:09-29:44]

Sexual Violence

Many of the sex scenes involving the biker gang and Satán are dubious in consent. Though they are willing participants, it's difficult to say for sure if the acts are truly consensual, as sexually pleasing him is a core part of the cult.

During the final scene, the director seduces one of the actresses; when she asks him to stop due to the cameras still rolling, he attacks, tortures, disembowels and eventually kills her. Although this is consensual at first, her consent is revoked and the woman is slaughtered in response.[1:16:07]
